Women Writers

* We have only read two women writers so far: Barbara Kingsolver for The Bean Trees and now Edith Wharton with Ethan Frome. Are women writers any different from men? Do they choose different topics? Do they have different writing styles? Do you prefer to read stories by men or women? Does it matter if a book is by a man or a woman?

I think that it isn't a lot of difference from a woman's and a man's writing styles. Well, the woman's writing style a bit different because woman writers tend to write about deeper and sensitive topics. I really don't mind if I am reading a man's or/ a woman's books, I say as long as I find the book interesting to read then I will read it.

Edith Wharton

* Skim the information about Edith Wharton. Write down five interesting facts about her life:
In 1902 she built The Mount, her estate in Lenox, Massachusetts, which survives today as an example ofher design principles

- Edith Wharton wrote several of her novels, including The House of Mirth (1905), the first of many chronicles of the nature of old New York, and entertained the cream of American literary society, including her close friend, the novelist Henry James
- Many of Wharton's novels are characterized by a subtle use of dramatic irony.
- Wharton was a committed supporter of French imperialism, describing herself as a "rabid imperialist". After World War I, she travelled to Morocco as the guest of the Resident General, General Hubert Lyautey, and wrote a book In Morocco, about her experiences. Wharton's writing on her Moroccan travels is full of praise for the French administration and for Lyautey and his wife in particular.
- Wharton continued writing until her death, lying in bed and dropping each finished page to the floor to be collected when she finished. Wharton's last novel, The Buccaneers, was unfinished at the time of her death.

Generation after generation my barrio has had the reputation of many desperado's living as a family of anger towards the rest of the world. They sometimes call my home the island for dangerous criminals or/ the d.c. The d.c. flotilla maybe small, but we all are stronger put together especially after the  siestas we all take. The Island maybe filled with criminals, but that doesn't mean that we don't have rules. We have only three major rules on the island. Rule number three, always show machismo. Even when you get down you must show bravado to keep safe from everyone in d.c. We may all consider each other family, but on this island everyone is your enemy too. Rule number two you must be alert for the renegade that are only there to help the enemies. Never let your guard down completely, but just enough to lead them in. Rule number one stick together while retrieving the bonanza, but I can feel it anon, we will not have to do this anymore  longer. We will take over everything!

Thoreau's View of Technology

What is Thoreau's view of technology?

He isn't very happy with the creation of technology, he felt that it was poison to the world by hiding and distracting the people with known sense.

Do you agree or disagree with him?

I don't agree with Thoreau's view of technology because I think that technology is a really good resource. It's a great contributor to my life and others because we use technology for mostly everything now a days.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of technology?

Advantages:

used for travel

for communication

for entertainment

for shopping

Disadvantages:

can brake down

not very reliable

it pollutes our minds

What technology do you use every day?

  I use lights

computer

 phone

the television

Could you go without technology for a day?

. Honestly I don't think I can go with out technology for one day, the reason being that it's located everywhere I go.

Podcast About Thoreau

1. What is the host's view of Thoreau?

The host's view of Thoreau was that he leads his followers to think and know what is going around them. He makes people believe that each person has a right to think and speak out what they feel.

2. What is Kathryn Todd's view of Thoreau?
Her view of Thoreau is that he was a important contributer to the history of time. She understands that he was a great part of history, but he was in some ways blind. She doesn't believe that he should have be given advice to no one when he doesn't take advice from other more experienced people (senior citizens).

3. What are the advantages of living your life like Thoreau?
The advantages of living Thereau's life is that you let your heart speak out and have believe in what you decide to do.

4. What are the disadvantages?
The disadvantages is that people do tend to push you away because most of the time your roaming around your own believes and don't ever take the time to listen to other peoples opinions and believes.

Civil Disobedience

*What actions by the government are you against?
The only main action that I am against the government is war. I dislike people fighting each other.

*What is the best way to change these actions? Can you use any of the ideas of Martin Luther King Jr. or Henry David Thoreau?
One way that I find helpful is peaceful protesting. I would maybe make a huge group and have them all understand where I am coming from and make in-powering speeches just like Dr. Martin Jr. Luther King.

Science Fiction

What is Science Fiction?
It is a genre of fiction. It differs from fantasy in that, within the context of the story, its imaginary elements are largely possible within scientifically-established or scientifically-postulated laws of nature (though some elements in a story might still be pure imaginative speculation).

Who are some of the famous authors?
Jonathon Swift

What are the settings like?
"a handy short definition of almost all science fiction might read: realistic speculation about possible future events, based solidly on adequate knowledge of the real world, past and present, and on a thorough understanding of the nature and significance of the scientific method."

Banned Books

The general reason why books are banned because the government doesn't want to let you know certain information(censorship). They only want people to know only certain information that they only like. Some other reasons why certain books are banned is because of profanity, the books contain religious or/ references, sex, violence, and etc. They may only want to protect us in some kind of way, but we should still have the right to know about them and read them, w/ FREEDOM. Our education would be affected because, within all of those books that I have read, I have learned new and knowledgeable information.

Last Meow

I have truthfully, never had a pet except for a goldfish and It didn't live really long. Even for the small time the goldfish lasted, I care of it a lot. The truth, is that I couldn't do anything if it did get sick. If I did have a better pet I would, absolutely care for it.

The Crucible Drafts

2. Crucible Reputations Essay
Oscar Wildes, an Irish novelist and poet once said, "One can survive everything
nowadays, except death, and live down anything, except a good reputation." Through
this, Oscar acknowledges that everything in society is pretty much escapable, but living
up to a good reputation within the community, is a constant and continuous effort. In the
book "The Crucible," Arthur Miller portrays multiple characters outliving and getting past
the strict moral values in an attempt to keep up with a good reputation through John
Proctor, Reverend Paris, and Abigail Williams.

This is a great introduction of the book. Mainly, because it starts out w/ a quote. That involves reputation and how it is hard to keep up w/ it.

In Arthur Miller's famous play The Crucible, innocent people are accused of witchcraft
and are killed as a result. The importance of one's reputation is one of the major themes
shown in the play. The townspeople are held to very strict moral values and must uphold
their good name in Salem's community. John Procter, Elizabeth Procter, and Abigail all
have there reputation misrepresented in some way. Each one was being accused of
witchcraft or lies to protect ones name.

I like the way this person starts out by saying that, innocent people were being killed.

In Arthur Miller's widely known play The Crucible, harsh punishment and even death is
given to faultless citizens who are accused of being involved with witchcraft. The name
of people held their reputation. People strive to keep a good name in the village so that
they are portrayed as affable people. The majority of people that were accused of being
witches were the outcasts of the town that had bad names in the village. Many
characters see their name or reputation as their position in society. Abigail
Williams, John Proctor, and Reverend Hale all value their reputation in the village and
are willing to do anything to keep their good name.

I like the way the this person starts out by saying that innocent people were being killed, too. I really like the way he or/her goes into detail and examples of how there reputation is being ruined.

Embedded Quotes

1. The poppet is dangerous w/ all of it's witchcraft, “hard proof."

2. There shall be no hiding of,"fear."

3. I have seen nothing of both my niece and money"vanished."

Fill in the blank story for SAT Words 1-15

The first day of school led to the last day of three kids lives. Yaquiline, the lothario, Yessica, the maverick, and Yanessa, the nemesis of Yaquiline. On that day, they expirienced a philippic between each other in english class. It started fine, they all sat down in class while Mr. Schreiber introduced himself and the class. They figured out he was a jingoist, because he was wearing a red, white, and blue tuxedo. But after seeing that, they realized who was amongst them. . . the infamous “Y Ladies.”
Yaqualine, and Yanessa, hated each other because Yaqualine took a bite of Yanessa’s Spicy Chicken Sandwhich, which led to Yanessa calling Yaqualin tawdry. Yaqualine, or “Yaquie”, stated that as a philanderer, she slept with Yanessa’s boyfriend. Yanessa’s previous view of as a quixotic young girl, immedietly went away.
One day Yessica came to school and yelled at Yanessa and Yaqualine using solecism, Yessica couldn’t say anything because she felt saturnine beacause of all those spicy chicken burgers that she ate. Yaqualine didnt really care because she was a procrustean, she was tired of arguing. So the rivalry between Yanessa and Yaqualine came to an end. Many people say it was a Pyrrhic victory, because even after the arguement, they still were not friends.
But the wierd part of the story is, why didn’t Yessica get involved? She has the spoonerism of words that confuses the Y Ladies to death. But recently she found the Y Ladies protean and unbearable. She could have won this arguement and be the number one Y lady and live in sybarite for the rest of her life!!

Are Ideas Worth a Life

I don't really have any ideas or situations that I would die for. It really depends on the idea or/ situation. The only one I can think of is, if I had to choice between the lives of thirty, young children or/ my own. I have to admit that I would be sad to die. Yet, it doesn't matter if I did choose myself. I wouldn't be able to live with myself, and sooner or/ later I would kill myself. This is one of the few ideas or/ situations I would die for. The truth is that who really knows, when you will be pushed into a situation, that may end up with death.

The Crucible

I have lost trust in a person, in the past. That was close to my heart, this person was great towards me. Well, up to the situation that really hurt our relationship. I was hurt what this person did to me, but I didn't really want to end our friendship that we shared. I did forgive this person, but the whole relationship from the past wasn't completely re-gained. We still are close yet, not as much as the past I ail for.

Reflection on Project

The group worked really well together. We had fun playing other people and we all loved the way the script was written. My performance was not that great, but I would say that I did a pretty good job. I had lots of fun playing Hale. The one major detail that I would like to change about my performance was to read a little slower. I read too fast, that I read another person's character. Besides my mistake, I have to say that our group worked well.
